Family background & Early life
Thomas Joseph McCarthy was born on 21st Sept 1895 in the townland of Clonmel in County Tipperary.
Thomas' family grew up in a solid brick two bed house. In the 1901 census they are listed as living at 51 Saint Lawrence, Palmerstown, Dublin [surname incorrectly listed as MCarthey. The 1911 cenus then has his father James and Thomas [15] and his brother Patrick [14] living at 6 in New Row, New Kilmainham Dublin. Thomas also had a younger sister named Brigid.
Thomas and the rest of his family were Roman Catholic
Adult life
As Thomas went to school and was literate he was working as a civil servant before joining the army. Thomas enlisted in the British Army as a Royal Engineer and was known as TJ.
Thomas was not married and had no children when he went to war in world war 1 and died.
Military Experience
I could not find much information on Thomas' military career but I do know that he was a Royal Engineer in the 2nd Field Squadron and was promoted to the position of 2nd Acting Corporal and was then promoted to 2nd Corporal.
Thomas died on the 25th Sept 1916 in Belgium and was awarded the Military Medal. Thomas is buried at the Guard Cemetry Les Boueff France. Thomas' brother Patrick immigrated to Western Australia after WW1 in 1923.
